First Blog First Post
Self-Introduction:
Background, This Class, and The Blog
I
do have bachelors and master’s in civil engineering from University Colorado of
Denver and master’s in data science from Southern Methodist University (Dallas
Texas). I am currently working as Intern Data Scientist with City and County of
Denver.
I did
a major transform, in my academic life, from civil engineering to a data enthusiastic
profession due to many reasons. First, because I did have limited knowledge in
data and its driven decision and want to have some insight about it. Second, I
observe that our world is turning to digitalizing itself and our future seems to
depend on virtual business. That in turn opens my interest to striving to have
a better understanding in the big data world. As the world transform into the
digital world, there increases the need for big data educators and experts.
But
what is big data? Big Data could be explained as huge amounts of
data (structured and unstructured) mostly warehoused in the cloud or in special
data centers, that are then used by enterprises, companies, organizations, institutions,
startups, the government, etc. for various uses (Neo, 2020). Big data
utilization, usually called big data analytics, include cleaning data, analyzing
data, forming patterns, trends and correlations, to extract some meaning. Big
Data is also characterized by its qualities, termed as 4Vs:
· Volume- a massive
amount of data and data storage (cloud storage etc.)
· Velocity- generating
of data with an incredible rate.
· Variety-heterogeneous
data of different formats and types that can easily available via such as social
media and the internet.
· Veracity-
data inconsistencies and uncertainty (unstructured data — images, social media,
video, etc.)
Big Data is usually related with other field such as Data
Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Deep Learning, etc. to
create or innovate new things for life betterment. That
means innovation in the big data future will help to inventing new technologies
and implementing them to effectively manage data.
I named my blog title as “The Future-The Big Data” where the link is at https://thefuture-thebigdata.blogspot.com/ . Its name reflects my interest in the future. Because our future is likely faced with an enormous, desperate, and fast-growing data. I just used a simple blog with a “simple blog” theme from “Bloger.com” that I am planning to tweaking it later to make it look better. Blogger is a solid solution for personal blogs, but it’s not the best resource for professional use (Tuca, updated February 24, 2021). Blogger has, however, simple appearance options which makes a blogger focus more on the writing part.
